HPCL North Central Zone HeadQuarters
The core design philosophy was to have HPCL’s values and commitment to environmental stewardship be translated in the design, blending high-performance design with energy-conscious principles.
Sustainable features are woven throughout the design.
- The 242 square meters roof area is equipped with a rainwater harvesting system capable of collecting nearly 9,000 liters of water over just two days.
- Terrace gardens and planters strategically placed across the site help mitigate heat gain, contributing to a cooler environment and protecting people from the harsh Lucknow sun.
- 182 solar panels that generate 60.06 kW of energy, fulfilling up to 60% of the building’s total energy needs. The energy strategy reduces dependence on conventional power sources and highlights the building’s sustainable approach.

One of the key challenges was optimizing the building's energy efficiency while maintaining a modern aesthetic and functional design. The building’s orientation was a critical starting point in optimizing its energy performance. The longer facades of the building were aligned along the north and south axes, with the southern side featuring a higher surface area of glazing to allow the winter sun to penetrate and warm the interiors naturally. Conversely, fewer openings on the northern facade help mitigate summer sun exposure, reducing the need for cooling. The strategic placement of service areas, such as toilets and staircases, on the northwest corner serves as a thermal buffer, absorbing heat and preventing it from reaching the building’s core. This careful configuration of spaces ensures that the building remains comfortable year-round while using minimal energy for heating and cooling.
Every detail of the HPCL North Zone Office reflects a meticulous approach to design—one that balances the technical demands of a modern office with the broader need for environmental responsibility. The building is more than just a functional space; it is a beacon of sustainable design in the urban fabric of Lucknow, offering a vision of how thoughtful architecture can contribute to both brand identity and the health of the planet.
