International Students’ Hostel
Amidst the lush expanse of the IIT Madras campus, the International Student Hostel is a place where nature and modern living harmoniously coexist. Carved out of the Guindy National Park, much of the campus is within a protected forest zone, home to rare flora and fauna, providing a fresh oasis of calm for the students, a stark contrast to the relentless pace of Chennai. Here, they can find solace, build friendships, and create memories that last a lifetime.
Designed as a ‘home away from home’, the hostel fosters a balance between private and communal spaces. The design focuses on bringing the ‘outside in’—integrating natural elements into the built environment while ensuring comfort and privacy. The eight-story structure is thoughtfully designed to maximize interaction with the landscape while maintaining energy efficiency and sustainability.
The first three floors of the building are dedicated to public activities, including dining halls, cafés, shops, stores, while the upper floors house hostel rooms, each providing direct visual access to the surrounding greenery. Additionally, every floor incorporates a common green terrace to break the building’s mass and enhance natural ventilation and daylighting. These open spaces foster informal interactions and spaces for relaxation—integral aspects of student life.

A key sustainability feature of the design is the strategic placement of toilet blocks along the outer envelope. This layout significantly reduces heat gain, ensuring comfortable indoor temperatures. Natural wind flow through the building is optimized to enhance passive cooling, reducing the need for mechanical ventilation.
The project’s design ethos is rooted in environmental responsibility. The existing site trees were meticulously studied—native trees were preserved, invasive species removed, and the few trees that had to be cut were transplanted to another location within the campus. The careful integration of the building within its natural surroundings allows it to maintain the ecological balance while also enhancing the green campus experience.
The hostel is strategically positioned in alignment with the adjacent Himalaya Mess, the campus’s main food court, ensuring ease of access for students. Two separate entrances—one main entrance for public access to the lower floors and another private entrance exclusively for hostel residents—maintain a clear distinction between shared and private spaces.
The International Student Hostel is more than just a living space—it is a backdrop for lifelong memories, friendships, and personal growth. Designed with sensitivity to the environment and elevating the student experience, the hostel embodies comfort, sustainability, and community living, setting a benchmark for campus residences in India.
