The ITG Goa Libraries are reimagining the concept of libraries in Goa through dynamic, adaptable spaces that foster knowledge exchange, collaboration, and community engagement. Spread across various sites in Goa, new construction and existing libraries are developed to change the idea of libraries from being quiet, solitary spaces into vibrant, community-driven hubs of knowledge.

The libraries are built to be modular and to be able to hold various activities, from educational seminars and community meetings to small gatherings and self-study sessions. The libraries would cater to all age groups, with designated spaces for children’s play and learning, quiet areas for elders, newspaper zones, and computer workstations. The design incorporates flexibility and movement, allowing each space to be easily repurposed for different activities depending on the community’s needs.

Local community engagement is a key aspect of the project, and the design embraces this by incorporating murals created by local artists, reflecting the diversity and richness of Goa’s history and traditions. Using prefabricated, repurposed containers, the project minimizes overall waste while ensuring a unique, interactive design and high durability. The ITG modular libraries are as eco-conscious as they are community-conscious.

The libraries are broadly segregated into these 3 typologies:

1. New Construction:
a) Reused Shipping Containers:
Local re-fabricated shipping containers have been chosen for their durability, modularity, and strong connection to the city’s port heritage. The use of prefabricated elements means that the project can be constructed and replicated across multiple locations, ensuring ease of scalability. Insulation and energy-efficient systems are incorporated to reduce the building’s environmental impact. The structure is strengthened with vertical steel sheets that have been treated for corrosion resistance. The internal walls and ceilings of the containers are insulated with high-density glass wool, and the exterior is treated with industrial-grade paint to maintain durability and aesthetics. The roof is constructed from corrugated metal, while the flooring includes a pre-mixed, high-strength concrete layer for durability. Each container can be easily transported and assembled on site using cranes. This method allows for quick and efficient construction, as well as easy relocation or expansion if necessary.

b) Light Gauge Steel Structural Framing Systems:
A modern design that will have a steel structure system used to build new libraries efficiently. Modular furniture used to be able to cater to all the functions for the space.

2. Renovation:
a) A selection of existing libraries in dilapidated conditions have been renovated.
With an in-depth site survey of the existing conditions, a select few key government libraries are being renovated to become a part of the ITG Goa Libraries.
